  • Overview

    Appen is looking for someone to provide expert linguistic assistance on pronuciations of Bahasa Malaysia as spoken in at least one of:

    1. Penang
    2. Iskandar Malaysia (Johor)
    3. Kuching
    4. Ipoh
    5. Kota Kinabilu 

    The person should be able to list the regular sound changes that occur from either the standard written form or the pronuniciation of BM as spoken in Kuala Lumpur into at least one of the dialects listed above. These rules should be written in the form of normal allophonic rules, eg /k/ -> [ʔ] / __#.


    In addition, the person will be required to check pronunciations, and confirm they are accurate for that dialect, or correct them as necessary.


    Project Information:


    Location: Remote

    Hours: around 20 hours in total (2-4 hours immediately, 4-6 hours at the end of October, 4-6 hours in mid-December and 4-6 hours in early February 2019)




    • Write allophic rules for at least one of the listed varieties
    • Perform validations of the automatically generated pronunciations.


    • Detailed phonetic knowledge of Bahasa Malaysia as spoken in at least one of the varieties listed, preferably a native speaker or living in that location.
      • Penang
      • Iskandar Malaysia (Johor)
      • Greater Kuching
      • Ipoh
      • Greater Kota Kinabilu (eg Sabah)
    • Ability to write allophonic rules for that variety
    • At least a Bachelors degree and preferably Masters degree that included a course in Phonology
    • Ability to check and correct pronunciations written in SAMPA (machine-readable IPA)
