    Tamil Voice Coach


    Appen has an immediate opportunity for a native-level Tamil speaker with strong skills in phonology & phonetics, to serve as a voice coach for text-to-speech system development. For this position, phonetic & phonemic transcription in X-SAMPA and/or IPA is an important skill. Another key component is to clearly communicate articulation requirements to a voice artist. There are two positions: voice coach and linguist.



    Project Details


    Start date: 2nd half of January 2019

    Duration: approximately 20 weeks

    Hours: up to 30 per week (but no minimum guarantee)

    Location In-country, India

    Type of engagement: Independent Contractor



    Basic qualifications:

    • Native level Tamil speaker 
    • Fluent/bilingual speaker of English
    • Proficient in reading and writing in the Tamil script
    • Degree in linguistics, preferably phonology and phonetics
    • Solid knowledge of Tamil phonetics/phonology (and pronunciation alphabets like IPA or X-SAMPA)
    • Comfortable working with computer
    • Able to join the project for 4-6 months (timelines still to be defined)

    Preferred qualifications:

    Experience in working in recording studio and with speech recordings

    Conducting voice training is a plus



    During recording sessions, support the voice talent in various ways, e.g.:

    • Help with pronunciation of difficult words
    • Correct the pronunciation of voice talent in case of mistakes
    • Ensuring the speaking rate, pitch and voice quality is consistent
    • Ensure consistency of reading ordinary and problematic words like foreign loans, proper names etc.
    • Provide vocal techniques for problematic (breathy/creaky) voice quality
    • Help talent read English prompts (following the given phonetic transcriptions
