Position Summary 

The transformation office partners with business leaders to scale operations and accelerate revenue growth at Appen.  Working closely with the Board, CEO, and executive leadership team, the transformation office is managing a complex program encompassing multiple cross-functional teams driving projects of critical importance to support the product and growth strategy for the company.  This is a multi-year program to embed a permanent capability for adapting and scaling fast.


The transformation office is looking for a Director that can be the primary partner for workstream leaders and senior executive stakeholders to help resolve key strategic and execution issues impacting the program.  This will require working across the business units on issues and analysis, and communicating key insights and actionable solutions to the executive leadership team and Board.  This person will also work with the Head of Transformation to shape the strategic direction and portfolio of the program.




Detailed operational and financial analysis to identify and articulate areas for cross-functional business improvement. 

Key skills required include:

  • Hypothesis based work planning
  • Data analysis and financial modeling – a core requirement
  • Engaging with team members from a wide variety of functions across the business
  • Ability to balance a detailed understanding of the problems with a laser focus on priority areas
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills – can make the complex simple
  • Engaging with senior leaders and the Executive Team to present findings and propose recommendations


Creation of operational plans that transform recommendations into actionable plans. 

Key skills required include:

  • Taking a principle driven approach to problem solving by understanding and continuously orientating to the priority objectives
  • Systems thinking – can factor in operational, financial, customer, and timing tradeoffs when developing operational plans
  • Facilitating workshops and other ideation sessions to capture and validate input for planning
  • Business case development
  • Stakeholder engagement to capture input from the business
  • Development of written content (slides or prose) that succinctly articulates the plans and provides sufficient guidance for the involved teams


Leading the execution of change initiatives across the business

Key skills include:

  • High level project management, taking a minimum sufficient approach but knowing when to lean in
  • Willingness to support teams on execution, which may include deep-dive process mapping, quantitative analysis, external research, customer/crowd interviews etc.
  • Ability to lead virtual teams to execution
  • Comfort with escalating unresolved roadblocks to steerco or exec teams and preparing information that enables efficient decision making
  • Leading change management and communications across the business for related initiatives


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Consulting experience a requirement; Preferably 3-5 years MBB Consulting experience (McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group or Bain & Company) 
  • Strong quantitative skills and high comfort with analysis
  • Fast to output – can identify the minimum sufficient level of information required for decision making
  • Intellectual agility - able to follow a hypothesis and quickly pivot as required
  • Structure communications, both written and verbal presentation
  • Self-led - can take a high level direction and translate into action
  • Able to roll-up sleeves to make change happen
  • Can handle multiple complex tasks in unison
  • Strong interest in technology, particularly the use of tech to improve internal operations
